An extended family session is when you have a session with multiple house holds. I have had parents say that we are not extended family, these are my kids! And I get it but extended family sessions are when your kids have kids and we are combining different households for one session :) These sessions have Grandparents, parents, aunts, uncles, and cousins all in one pictures. These session have all of your favorite people together at one time.
Some thing else that is true about extended family sessions is that they are hard! It is hard to schedule multiple house holds to be able to meet with the photographer during perfect lighting conditions. It is also hard for the photographer to work with a large group, that typically includes children, and have everyone cooperate at the same time. But the life long images make all of these challenges worth it. For example, it is so special to have images of grandparents together with all of their grandchildren.
Kids really love their cousins. They can be a child's first best friend. Photographing these relationships is priceless.
Along with the images of the extended family all together we also take pictures with all of the individual families. So really it is like multiple sessions in one day.
This day ended up being really cold and WINDY! We decided not to reschedule because it was difficult to find a day that worked for everyone in the first place. We moved very fast and didn't take as many images as I normally do but the images still ended up pretty! Here are a couple of behind the scenes of cold cousins warming up before it is their turn in front of the camera :)
In case you didn't notice, this extended family is my husband's family. And since I was the photographer I had my sister in law shoot a couple of pictures of me with my family. She did a good job! I didn't have professional family pictures this year so I am happy to have a couple of me with my growing family too!
