It seems that many families dread family picture day. There can be fighting, stress over staying clean or stress over rambunctious children. I try to keep sessions from feeling like this. My favorite family sessions are the ones that really turn into playtime. I love when the mommy and daddy know how to make their kiddos smile and are okay with being silly to make that happen. I love capturing a family's connection and their real smiles. It is like the family is having a fun day at the park and I just happen to be there to capture the fun memories. This family portrait session turned into just that. This family of four session started out with playing ring around the rosie in a patch of buttercups.
Walking back and forth on a path is a great way to get real smiles and interaction between family member. With older kids, red light green light is also a lot of fun!
At many family sessions I bring something for the children to play with. In the past I have brought bubbles and even a kite. This session we had a chance to play with a parachute! It turned out to be just as cute as I imagined. As you can see, the kiddos loved the parachute.
This little girl LOVED having her picture taken which made me enjoy our session even more. She would pick the location and the pose. And then when I told her we were almost finished she asked for ten more pictures. I then promised her I would do twenty more pictures. I counted the pictures that I did to make sure that I kept my promise. If it wasn't for her asking for more pictures I would not have captured the beautiful image of her sitting on the rock wall.
Little sister was in love with all of the flowers. And I was in love with her little smile.
Of course, during every session we do posed happy family pictures too. These are typically the pictures that clients like to have hung on their walls and I am happy to get these images as well.
Then, since I have a slight addiction, we finished off the session with silhouette pictures during the sunset.
You can go either way with your family session with a more lifestyle family session or a more posed family session. What is most important is when you are having a good time during your session then you will have more positive feelings about your images in the future. You will not just love your pictures because they are beautiful but you will love them because of the memories of the fun day you had together.
